Find & Remove
Duplicate Photos
Google Takeout exports every photo twice. After Metadata Fixer processes your files, this plugin finds the duplicates and helps you reclaim gigabytes of wasted disk space.
Why Does Google Takeout Create So Many Duplicates?
It's not a bug — it's how Takeout is designed. And it means you're wasting disk space on copies you don't need.
Year Folders + Album Folders = Double Copies
Google Takeout exports every photo into a year-based folder and into every album it belongs to. A photo from 2019 that's in three albums? That's four copies in your export. Multiply across thousands of photos and you can easily have 30-50% duplicate files.
Burst Shots and Near-Identical Photos
Modern phones take burst photos and HDR+ shots that look nearly identical. You kept them all in Google Photos because storage was free, but now they're eating up your local disk. The Duplicate Finder spots these visually similar shots so you can keep the best one.
Multiple Takeout Exports Over Time
If you've run Google Takeout more than once — maybe because the first download failed, or you exported different date ranges — you'll have overlapping files. Merging these exports without a deduplication tool means keeping every redundant copy.
How the Duplicate Finder Works
Two layers of detection ensure nothing slips through.
Exact Match Detection
Every file is fingerprinted with a SHA-256 hash. If two files produce the same hash, they are byte-for-byte identical — guaranteed. This catches the Takeout year-folder/album-folder copies instantly, no matter what the filenames are.
Visual Similarity Detection
Photos that look almost the same but aren't byte-identical — burst shots, slight crops, or re-encoded versions — are caught using perceptual hashing. Each image is reduced to a compact visual fingerprint and compared. You control the sensitivity threshold.
Three Steps to a Clean Photo Library
Scan
Point the plugin at your processed photo folder. It hashes every file and computes visual fingerprints for all images.
Review
Browse duplicate groups with side-by-side thumbnails. Each group shows file sizes and lets you pick which copies to keep. Nothing is deleted without your say-so.
Clean Up
Delete the duplicates you don't need with one click, or export a CSV/JSON report first. Reclaim disk space instantly.
Why is this a separate plugin?
Metadata Fixer's job is to fix timestamps and GPS data — it does that for everyone. Deduplication is a different problem that not every user needs.
By keeping it separate, we avoid bloating the core app with features you might not use. You only pay if you need it. And because the plugin launches from the results screen, it fits naturally into your workflow: fix metadata first, then clean up duplicates.
It Works, or Your Money Back
If the Duplicate Finder doesn't find any duplicates in your library, we'll refund you in full. No questions asked.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from just comparing filenames?
Filenames are unreliable. Google Takeout often renames files or adds suffixes like (1). The Duplicate Finder compares actual file content using SHA-256 hashes, so it catches duplicates regardless of what the files are named. For near-identical photos (burst shots, crops), it uses perceptual hashing that compares what the image looks like, not just its bytes.
Will it delete my photos automatically?
No. The plugin shows you every duplicate group with thumbnails and lets you choose which copies to keep. Nothing is deleted until you explicitly click "Delete Selected" and confirm. You're always in control.
Can I use it on any folder, or only Metadata Fixer output?
Any folder. While it's designed to work after Metadata Fixer processes your Takeout export, you can point it at any directory on your computer. It scans all images and videos inside, including subfolders.
What's the "similarity threshold" control?
It controls how strict the visual comparison is. A low threshold only flags photos that are nearly identical (like the same shot with slightly different compression). A higher threshold catches more variations (like burst photos taken a second apart). You can adjust it and re-analyze without rescanning.
Do I need Metadata Fixer to use this plugin?
Yes, this is a plugin that runs inside Metadata Fixer. You'll need a Metadata Fixer license ($39) plus this plugin ($9.99). After installing, you can launch it from the Tools menu or directly from the results screen after processing your files.
Can I export the results before deleting anything?
Yes. You can export a full report as CSV or JSON before taking any action. This is useful if you want to review the results in a spreadsheet or keep a record of what was found.
What's your refund policy?
If the plugin doesn't find any duplicates in your library, contact us within 30 days for a full refund. We believe you shouldn't pay for something that doesn't help your specific situation.
